How to choose an AI browser assistant in 2026

The best AI browser assistant is the one that matches where your work lives: a sidebar for your existing Chrome, an AI-first browser for search, a cloud agent for unattended runs, or a framework for custom automation.

Start with the four product categories

Products called AI browser assistants can be fundamentally different. Some answer questions beside a page, some replace the browser, some run remotely, and some are building blocks for developers.

  • Chrome sidebar: stays beside the tabs and sessions you already use.
  • AI-first browser: makes search and assistance part of a separate browser.
  • Cloud agent: performs longer tasks in a vendor-managed environment.
  • Developer framework: gives engineers control over hosting, code and execution.

Use decision criteria, not feature counts

Count the tasks you can complete reliably, not the number of buttons in a feature list. Account access, write approvals, completion evidence, model choice and the cost of changing browsers matter more than a long list of prompts.

  • Can it work in the current tab without opening unnecessary pages?
  • Can it use structured service operations instead of fragile clicking?
  • Does it ask before sending, publishing or changing data?
  • Does it report sources and verify the result?

Where resolvenengine fits

resolvenengine is a Chrome side-panel assistant built around the current tab, background research and permissioned connectors. Its released connections include Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Notion, Slack, ClickUp, GitHub, GA4 and Search Console, plus custom HTTPS/OpenAPI and remote MCP services.

It is not a separate browser and it is not a headless framework. Pro costs $19 USD per month and requires your own supported AI API key, with model usage billed separately by the provider.

Run the same five tests before choosing

A polished demo does not reveal whether an assistant behaves well in everyday work. Give every candidate the same small test set and compare the evidence, interruptions and cleanup it leaves behind.

  • Research a current topic without opening unnecessary tabs and require cited sources.
  • Continue a task after navigating away, then check whether context survives.
  • Ask for a write action and inspect the approval step before it runs.
  • Use a long rendered page and compare normal extraction with a full-page capture.
  • Stop a task halfway through and confirm that no later write still happens.

Calculate total cost, not only subscription price

A monthly subscription, model usage and the time spent correcting failed work belong in the same calculation. Bring-your-own-key products expose model cost more clearly, while bundled products may be simpler but give you less control over model choice.

Estimate cost with your own repeated tasks. A cheaper model that needs three retries can cost more than a stronger model that completes the task once.
